Cool, Eco-Friendly Gift Ideas that Help a Small Business? Yes, Please!

One of our favorite local companies is smack-dab in the middle of a Kickstarter campaign, and we wanna show a little love where a little love is due.

Who?  Raleigh's own Tierra Ideas is the exclusive manufacturer of travel bags and purses made from recycled aircraft materials and recycled bicycle inner tubes.
What?  “Taking Recycle Higher,” a Kickstarter campaign
When?  The campaign will run from November 14, 2011 through December 26, 2011. The goal is to raise $11,000 to support their new Altitude Collection product line, which includes bags made from recycled Delta Air Lines seatback covers and curtains.
Where?  The “Taking Recycle Higher” Kickstarter campaign can be found here.
Why (straight from Matt Mahler, Tierra Ideas founder)?  “Large amounts of worn-out airline industry materials ultimately end up in landfills. Recently, the industry began focusing significant efforts on finding new ways to recycle this waste. We hope our Kickstarter campaign will allow us to further increase our production and create consumer goods out of materials that would otherwise end up as trash.”

Wait, What is Kickstarter?

Kickstarter is the world’s largest funding platform for creative projects, including those in the fields of design, art, technology, and music. All Kickstarter projects must reach funding goals before their deadlines or no money changes hands, allowing anyone to test concepts with no risk. In exchange for pledging money, each campaign offers unique perks.

How Will Tierra Ideas Use the Funds They Raise?
Donations from backers will go towards the purchase of manufacturing equipment, production, and product development.

What's in It for Me?
In exchange, the company is offering the chance to pre-order bags made with the latest recycled First Class fabric. These bags have previously only been available in a few select Raleigh, NC stores.

The Rest of the Story
Tierra Ideas and Delta Air Lines formed a partnership last year, allowing for worn aircraft curtains and seatback covers to be upcycled and turned into high quality bags and other accessories. Each bag is made of an average of 85% recycled materials and is sewn in Raleigh, supporting the North Carolina textile industry.

Tierra Ideas has been featured in USA Today, Sky Magazine, Diane Sawyer's Made in America, and Bob Vila's Blog.
